Missed Dose? Took Your Dose Twice? What Now?

Featured Replies

Many of us have either missed a dose, couldn't remember if we took our dose or realized we took the wrong amount. What can we do? Most importantly, don't panic. There may be a few bumps till your body levels out but these should be minor. Treat it as you would a drop, hold and stabilize/return to WD normal before continuing your taper or making any changes. Let your body set the pace.

Missed Dose

If you have missed your dose, take as soon as you remember.

Then, if your next scheduled dose is less than 12 hours away, you may want to delay it a few hours just so you don't dump too much drug in your system at once.

For some reference examples:

  • you missed your dose and should have taken it 10 hours ago; take immediately; take your next scheduled dose on time

  • you missed your dose and should have taken it 16 hours ago, take immediately; take your next scheduled dose 6 hours later than usual; then take the following dose at your regular time

Doubled Dose

Take your next scheduled dose at the regular time . Do not try to compensate for the double dose. Stick with your regular dosage, same time.

Wrong Dose

If you took too much:

Take your next scheduled regular dose at the regular time. No adjustments are needed.

If you took too little:

If you realize this within 12 to 16 hours of taking it, take the remaining amount of the dose. Take the next scheduled dose at the regular time.

Missed Split Doses

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Depending on when you now take it, you may want to delay the next scheduled dose a bit to prevent drug dumping as recommended above, taking into consideration your dosing schedule.

Split Wrong Dose

If you took too much or too little:

Adjust your next dose by taking less or more, keeping your daily total consistent.

If you took your full daily dose in one dose or more than your daily dose, resume your next day's schedule as normal.

Tips for Remembering Your Dose

-set a daily reminder on your phone calender

-set a daily alarm

-make a physical calender posted on the fridge to check off

-use a weekly pill box

-label glass bottles, one for each day of the week

-download a tracker like Medisafe, Pillo, My Therapy

-keep you medication visible

-take it at the same time you do other things like brushing your teeth, grabbing a drink in the morning, etc so it is fixed in a routine

@LostinCanada

I took my dose 5 hours late due to falling asleep. I didn’t even know my body would let me fall asleep and stay asleep that much past my dosing time. I usually dose at 9:15 but I fell asleep- . It must’ve been around 8:30 PM and didn’t wake up until two in the morning. Today has been horrible activating. Of course. This med is already activating, just not this bad.

Do the guidelines work with a long half-life med like mirt? I’m assuming so.

Just touching base for reassurance

Yes these guidelines are not dependent on half life of a drug. It is based on the body being dependent on the drug which is more far reaching than the half life.
