Petition For Change In The Mental Health Sytem and Psychopharmacology

Featured Replies

Awhile back my best friend MA205 and I started a petition on change.org to try and raise awareness regarding issues with psychiatric medications, lack of informed consent, protracted withdrawal, PSSD, TD, Akathisia, and other issues related to psychiatry and the mental health system. So far we have close to 2500 signatures and soon we will be doing another mailing to the listed decision makers and several media outlets as well. In addition to adding your support you will also have the opportunity to comment on your experiences and leave whatever input you feel appropriate or useful. We just ask that you keep it clean and reasonably professional. Awareness is spreading and with your support and comments we can help to effect the change that is so desperately needed.

Ah. I saw this on Reddit a few months ago & signed. I also shared it to my Instagram. I re-joined the Psychiatry Survivor community on Instagram around x-mas (& joined all of the Psychiatry Survivor pages on Facebook, too) for more camaraderie but have not really participated on either social media platform. I watched more YT videos (incl. interviews with Survivors) around x-mas + January for camaraderie and support during horrific withdrawal.

I was too sick in withdrawal for the stimulating aspect of Instagram & especially Facebook and then again was too sick in withdrawal a few times recently & have more tapering reductions to go being as little incapacitated as possible. I prefer the Message Boards anyway, as they have a more of an academic-feel.

Someone in 1 of the Psychiatry Survivor subreddits (maybe the Akathesia subreddit) made a post about this petition.

I should update my signature with specific information and not self-bereavement information.

Too many, really.

I just re-posted on Facebook and this is a copy of that post.

Greetings everyone. There is a petition on Change.org titled "Petition for Change in the Mental Health System and Psychopharmacology". I am a co-author of this petition with my friend Amanda.

As some of you may know, there has been a recent uptick of activity within the US HHS and at the FDA regarding re-evaluation of the risks of long term use of SSRI antidepressants. Efforts are underway to compel the US FDA to add black box warnings regarding the risks of protracted withdrawal, PSSD, and other negative impacts associated with this class of medications. Efforts are also being made to compel the FDA to issue new guidelines regarding the necessity of slowly tapering these medications along with more specific recommendations on how to conduct a proper medication taper.

This battle has been ongoing for a long time by many people and organizations that are fighting every day to make the needed changes to our current systems of mental health care and prescribing / de-prescribing practices. Our petition currently has over 2700 signatures and we plan to do another mailing to the listed decision makers and the media once we achieve 3000 signatures and this will include the US FDA. Pressure is being applied on multiple fronts through social media and other avenues to help bring about the changes that are so badly needed. As such, we would like to gather the remaining needed signatures and include our petition as part of that multi front pressure on the FDA which is now starting to show signs of significant progress. Please sign, comment and pass this petition along to anyone who may be interested and help add your voice to the collective voice of change.
