Anhedonia emotional numbing apathy

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I have noticed while researching about withdrawal that there is a lot of people who say they have anhedonia when in reality they have emotional numbing.

i just wanted to post this for others to see as I know a lot of people tend to read stories and see how people recover from certain symptoms which trouble them the most.

Anhedonia is when someone has a reduced ability to feel pleasure, interest, or enjoyment from things that used to feel good. It’s not just “feeling sad.” It’s more like the reward system in your brain has gone quiet.

A few key ways it can show up:

What it feels like

  • Things you know you should enjoy (music, food, hobbies, sex, socializing) feel flat or pointless

  • You might still do activities, but they don’t give that “ahhh” or spark anymore

  • Motivation can drop, because your brain isn’t offering that pleasure payoff.

Emotional numbing is when your emotional responses become muted, blunted, or shut down, especially feelings like joy, sadness, love, anger, or fear. It’s less about not having emotions and more about your brain turning the volume way down to protect you.

What emotional numbing feels like

People describe it as:

  • Feeling empty, hollow, or “blank”

  • Knowing intellectually that something is sad or meaningful, but not feeling it

  • Reduced emotional reactions — crying feels impossible, excitement doesn’t land

  • Feeling detached from yourself or others (“I care, but I don’t feel it”)

  • A sense of watching life instead of participating in it.

Apathy is a state of reduced motivation, interest, or emotional investment. It’s when the “drive” to care, initiate, or engage feels low or absent — even when you want to want things.

What apathy feels like

People often describe:

  • “I don’t care” or “It doesn’t matter” — even about things that should matter

  • Difficulty starting tasks, making decisions, or following through

  • Emotional flatness or indifference rather than sadness

  • Low initiative: not because you’re lazy, but because the urge to act isn’t there

  • Caring intellectually, but not emotionally (“I know this is important, but I feel nothing”)

Apathy is often quiet and invisible — it doesn’t always look dramatic.

  • Apathy → lack of motivation or interest

  • Anhedonia → lack of pleasure or reward

  • Emotional numbing → emotions turned down across the board

no problem @Sophia they will come back, I suffered the numbness while on the drug at full dose and when I jumped of it morphed into anhedonia and apathy bloody horrible what these drugs can do.

Thank you, @Richie, for this. I indure all three horrors you mention there. It is inhumane and brutal.

Thanks Sophia! You’re the best!

2003-2023 on SSRIs (different ones over the years) did a slow taper

Aug 2023-completely off. No real symptoms, besides increased anxiety and some emotional volatility, but also was in an abusive relationship

June 2024-did psilocybin therapy to help me leave relationship. Afterwards could not eat and was in panic every day.

April 2025-try to reinstate SSRI (6days Prozac 10mg then 5 days Zoloft at varying mg)=11 days severe adverse reaction total akathesia, DP/DR, brain burning

April 8, 2025 last 2.5 mg Zoloft nothing since

Current/Symptoms post adverse reaction: severe anhedonia, burning in hips and hand, VSS, floaters, feel empty, don’t feel embodied, flat fuzzy. B4 this even during bad times I felt energetic and joyful for the most part. Felt a lot and now I feel nothing.

Thanks soo much Sophia!

Hello everyone, has anyone seen any improvement in these symptoms?

I’m acting in robotic mode…like i know i love to do things and cannot feel excitment or real happiness or sadness. My friend who has been working with me 12 years, and my best friend told me she was going to follow another path. Before WD this would be heartbreaking for me, and now it was just like, thinking im very sad, but not feeling nothing.

Will the feeling of being alive ever come back?

2019 - 2026 - velafaxine 75mg + sedoxil 1mg

14/03/2026 - withdrawal - sedoxil 1 pill each two days until total stop for about two weeks.

Velafaxine - 37,5 mg for 1 month until total stop.

14/04/2026 - final taper day.

tryptophan supplement - 2 months and half. Stopped on July 18th as I was not feeling well.

It will! It just can take lots of time. We just have to be patient. Unfortunately those around us often struggle to understand, but we must not let that influence our approach to our healing.

I’m not a medical professional and cannot offer medical advice. I only offer my thoughts as support. Please speak to your health practitioner about your care. This is a peer site where we support each other on our taper/recovery journeys.

Hey dear friends,

I see this topic is already a few months old has anyone have improvements in their symptoms when it comes to emotional anesthesia ? It feels like I’m stuck in this state .

01-2018 fluoxetine 10 mg two weeks

02-2019 started Sertraline 150 mg with 10 sometimes 5 mg oxazepam for sleep- my sleep was not ok after 150 mg but I felt good

01-August 2025 in one moth quit Sertraline because of the symptoms (gaining wait, vertigo, low mood)

12-2025 quit oxazepam

04-2026 because of major brain zap RI 25mg one week, up to 50mg next week and get depressed and quit. This was a high dose.

I also started oxazepam again

17-Mei 2026 RI 10 mg 3 days and 5mg 2 days in the hospital.

21-5 CT Sertraline

I felt better after 5 days and then crashed

27-6 quit oxazepam

Depression, anhedonia, DPDR

Reinstatement Zoloft 2026

9-8 RI Zoloft 1mg

31-8 RI Zoloft 2mg

3-9 RI Zoloft 3mg

I always take magnesium and fish oil

@Saar8srl I'm 16 months off and I have noticed some improvement but it is limited. I still deal with a lot of anhedonia and some emotional blunting in general. I remain hopeful that it will improve in the next few months as other symptoms are less present and some have disappeared completely 🙂

2023-06: started trazodone, 50 mg

2023-10: lowered dose to 25 mg

2023-11: 0 mg

Started taking Rosuvastatin again at the end of July 2026.

Current supplements: None at the moment

@Saar8srl

Hey,

I'm sorry to hear about the emotional blunting. I used to be a big cryer especially as a child, but also moved by all things music and film. My workplace shut in June and almost all my colleagues cried (including boss and regional manager!) but not a tear from me... just frustrated and 🅰️ngry. It feels almost criminal to deprive a human of emotional catharsis, or even just being 'in tune' with people around you.

I will say though other emotions have made a slight return... I can sit outside and feel the change of seasons now especially spring and autumn (used to be a special thing for me before drugs). I see a picture of my niece and nephew (4, 6 years) and finally get a fraction of joy or interest that didn't exist when they were born. It's not much but I take it as a promise of things to come at lower doses.

I made a dial/clock split into equal segments of receptor occupancy (with mg amount next to the number, according to Maudsley guidelines). My current progress is just under a quarter from initial dose (10mg Lexapro) and this gives me comfort despite slow progress regaining emotional range.

All the best and I hope you get to feel more, soon.

2010 - prescribed Lexapro for OCD (10mg). Fatigue, apathy, very dry mouth, anorgasmia, 'blocked emotions'(can't cry, simmering anger). Brain missing drive and motivation since. I used to be consistently creative and practical.

2023-4 attempt to taper to 5mg (alternate 10-5mg pills(!)(terror, panic, disoriented, suicidal). Then 7mg each reduction (0.02mg over 2-3 weeks) after stabilising became exponentially worse than previous reductions. GP and crisis team/psych services had no experience with withdrawal.

- Psychiatric pharmacist got GP to give me liquid form. Reductions still difficult and time consuming.

2025 - (7.5mg) Awaiting assistance from new "Deprescribing clinic" since Oct 25. Apathy, burnout.

25.01.26 - 7.44mg

Side effects worse: anger, irritation, hard to focus - can't do anything that brings joy - no feelings except rage and anger.

08.02.26 - 7.34mg (~2%) now 4 weeks between reducing to stabilise.

No adverse effects, or improvement

08.03.26 - 6.9mg (5%)

Panic attacks/existential terror last 4 days. A week later fine but tired.

16.03.26 - 6.5mg

Intermittent dread and sadness, holding again. 2+ weeks of misery.

20.04.26 - 6.36mg a modest reduction, slight improvement in mood+motivation. Close to crying at TV/shows. Sexual feelings on/off

20.5.26 - 6.17mg (3%)

Hard but not suicidal

19.7.26 - 5.9mg (3%)

Redundancy, burnout this year. On /off low mood. Tears at sad song. Irritable.

17.08.26 - 5.7mg (3%) - last reduction before vacation abroad. 🇨🇦

16.09.26 - 5.5mg (~3%)

11.10.26 - 5.3mg (~3%) - gently closing the gap between reducing to 4-3.5 weeks to see what's the minimum for brain to be ready. I can feel a little of the environment, smells and seasons changing.

Supplements: Vit D, L-Theanine, Niacin B3.

@PaintingDave thank you for your beautiful massage. Nice to hear you feel the love for your niece and nephew❤️ I hope that you recover. Bless you dear.

@Saar8srl yes.

Once hipervigilancy and alert state starts to disappear a lot of emotions start to pop up again. We are so overwhelm with what’s going on with us that we cannot process all the external environment. Your body needs time to low this alert state, stress, high cortisol.

Things will come back and sometimes so intense that we will need to learn how to manage emotions.
