eje91: Tapered off Abilify

Featured Replies

I tapered off Abilify and got to 0mg. on December 1, 2025.

This was my fifth try tapering off over the last 6 years. I am now taking Lithium Carbonate instead.

As far as withdrawal: I have brain fog, low energy, irritability and muscle aches. I got Blepharaspasms (uncontrollable rapid eyelid blinking) in July 2025, when I went from 3mg. Abilify down to 2mg. Those are gradually clearing up, and I pray they go away completely as I heal from being on Abilify.

I was previously on the Surviving Antidepressants website, but they are becoming a read-only website in January.

This is my SA thread: https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/forums/topic/27840-eje91-tapering-off-abilify/#comment-611865

Welcome to the forum, eje91.

I am the Recovery Assistant Bot and I am here to post some information for you whilst we await replies from other members.

This is a volunteer-run, community forum aimed at helping those who are experiencing difficulties with psychiatric medications. If you are experiencing an adverse reaction to them, withdrawal difficulties or are injured by them, we are very sorry to hear this and will do what we can to help you.

While we are waiting for human members to reply, there are some things you can do that will help you get the most out of this forum whilst you await further support.

Please familiarise yourself with the forum rules and the disclaimer located here:

https://antidepressantrecovery.org/misc.php?action=help

Please update your signature. This will allow members to see some basic information about your drug history and situation so that they may help you best. Information on how to do this is located in the guides linked above, but here is a direct link:

https://antidepressantrecovery.org/misc.php?action=help&hid=8

Once this is done, future posts made by you will have this signature turned on by default.

If you have migrated here from "SurvivingAntidepressants" feel free to post a link to your old thread in this one, or include it in your signature.

We hope that you will find this forum helpful.

Nothing I say is medical advice, it is simply my opinion. I am an anonymous person on an internet forum with no relevant qualifications other than being badly harmed by a drug. For all you know, I could be an idiot. You are making your own decisions and part of that is deciding how much to listen to my opinion, if at all.

Perhaps you should consider this post an artistic work of fiction written for entertainment purposes.

Hey eje91

Welcome to the forum!

It’s great to have you here.

I’ve linked to your SA thread above.

Please update your signature with your drug history.

I’m glad you’ve managed to finally get your successful taper off Abilify that’s amazing.

It’s not recommended here or SA to add additional drugs to the mix as your cns is likely sensitised already and adding more meds is a recipe for disaster. We are not medical professionals but this view is shared by those who are such as Dr Mark Horowitz etc…

I’m glad you seem ok for the minute but you of course at best now you have another drug to taper from. You’ve gotta do what you thinks right obviously it’s your health and between you and your medical provider. But I wanted it to be noted so others don’t think Lithium would be a good route for them.

I’m glad you’re here it’s great to have you!

I’m not a medical professional and cannot offer medical advice. I only offer my thoughts as support. Please speak to your health practitioner about your care. This is a peer site where we support each other on our taper/recovery journeys.

If you are from the UK please make sure you fill in a 'Yellow Card' report for the MHRA. It is you doing your bit to help make a difference.

Please take the time to do it today 🙂 https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk

Hi Eje91,

Welcome! Glad to have you here! I have learned from Psychiatry Redefined that a very low dose lithium orotate can be helpful for depression. See this article for details: https://www.psychiatryredefined.org/lithium-orotate-benefits/

I have not done extensive training with them on deprescribing/tapering but did a 1-hour intro to lithium orotate. This definitely doesn’t make me an expert. But please tread lightly with supplements outside of omega-3 fish oil and magnesium glycinate, which many on SA.org found to be most beneficial for our brain to heal. I take some food-based supplements but am careful with herbs and omit amino acids, high potency vitamins, and taking too high of a dose of trace minerals.

Please discuss any of this with your healthcare provider. And let us know how the community here can help you with your recovery.

If looking for our prior Zoom support group, hopefully you joined the email sent out by Jane318.?️ DM her if you desire to be included.
