Thank you @BarbX I don't know if you know much about the effects of serotonin on blood vessels. The "sero" refers to the blood and "tonin" to tone, so serotonin plays a major role in vascular tone. It can increase the tone (make vessels narrower) and you'll feel pain due to less oxygen getting through. For years I suffered with back spasms and cervicogenic headaches. Often the headaches came first. I spent many years/decades and lots of money on physiotherapy to loosen up my muscle spasms and I learned myself how to massage the spasmed muscles just under my occiput, which gave me some relief. I read a book by John Sarno (can't remember the name of it and he talks about mild oxygen deprivation (MOD), also known as tension myositis syndrome (TMS) where some of the blood is diverted for other uses like digestion or heavy demands from the brain. It's only recently doing some research when I realised the major role of serotonin. In retrospect the issues only began after I started my first SSRI nearly 30 years ago. I never thought they were related. I had a workplace psychological injury in 2019 and things got really bad after that I needed hot water bottles nearly 24/7 and the hotter the better. I actually had burns on my back and it was constantly red. I used diazepam and baclofen to reduce muscle spasms, but they only took me so far. Eventually my GP put me on low dose naltrexone (LDN) and it's been amazing in terms of relief. Bear in mind this was before I started tapering or even knew anything about tapering. I don't know how this would be tolerated by someone who is already CNS sensitised. I'm going through a bad spell at the moment particularly with abdominal wall muscle spasms and upper back and sometimes headaches and back on the hot water bottles after years. I can see why it's a WD symptoms now I have an understanding of how serotonin affects muscle pain. I hope this helps and that my experience will lead you to do some more research and possibly find something that may work for you. Did the headaches start after you started tapering or are they long standing? Thank you so much for this info. I will do some research. No the head pain started after a too high up dose during withdrawal. I had a few instances of overnight severe acute head pain that lasted a few seconds and shock like symptoms which went down my spine and shortly thereafter developed burning pain in my face and head which has also now progressed to the occipital area. One day burning pain and the next pressure pain. It has been everyday for over two years now. I use a head pad behind my neck and a heated eye mask every night and throughout the day too. One neurologist I saw thinks I may have had an episode of RCVS, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction that has led to a condition called persistent daily head pain which is hard to treat because normal migraine meds cause vasoconstriction and of course I cannot touch anyway because they effect serotonin receptors. Apparently Paroxetine can cause this. I am in a precarious situation. I am so sorry you are going through a bad time as well and I really do hope you get some relief soon. May 16May 16 Author Hi LIC and Wombat,I have just recently changed from making my own liquid to compounded capsules. I started to get an increase in symptoms and my husband was concerned about the accuracy making it at home. I had no problem changing over. My husband has been liaising with the chief pharmacist in regard to the need for extreme accuracy due to my sensitivity. They are using my tablets. I only cut 2.5% and have extra tablets just in case I need to hold for longer and the turn around is very quick for dispensing. I would have liked to have had a compounded liquid but the pharmacies here will only make up one weeks liquid from tablets due to lack of stability concerns. However they can order the active ingredients from the US and make it up with longer stability but it costs $1800.00 for 3 months supply. I still get some intense withdrawal symptoms so perhaps I should have stayed on a water taper liquid, it’s so hard to know what to do when you have so few options. However I am sticking to this now for the foreseeable future as I do not want to make anymore changes. Head pain is still debilitating but hey I’m still here… I was going to update but I wanted to see how it went for a bit longer. Down to 6.8mg and holding for a bit. Also the guy on warranty said sometimes the cord stops preventing surges and needs replacing. I never had success with compounding pharmacies. Hope it works out. ❤️🙏 I am not a medical professional.
