Overthepill: Antidepressants - A gift and a curse

Day 19 off the med, last night was rough did not sleep as deep as the night before, was very restless. Today I have this weird feeling in my stomach and chest that's hard to describe, like a buzzing in my body. I'm terrified of developing akathesia. The muscle tension in my chest back and neck is very tight, I'm hoping that it subsides some soon. This is all on top of the head symptoms I'm dealing with. The best way I can describe how I'm feeling today is a lot of anxiety manifesting itself physically in my body. I really hope this feeling leaves soon it's very uncomfortable. It's almost 1pm and I haven't wanted to get out of bed because of how I feel.

I’m sorry @overthepill. These symptoms are all common and they will pass, we just can’t say when. Keep passing the time, we’re with you.

I’m not a medical professional and cannot offer medical advice. I am new to this journey and my thoughts are based only on my personal experience with psychiatric drugs. This is a peer site where we support each other on our taper/recovery journeys.

@overthepill , I'm sorry for the discomfort . When I had this in the stomach or chest, I used to call it quivers, yes I know it is uncomfortable but this is normal WD symptoms. I guess if you can muster it, move around and distract yourself as much as you body can handle it. I know it can seem relentless but just the simplest thing as coloring in a book, a word find, any thing that keeps your mind of the symptoms. You will get through this. Your still very early in the withdrawal process, so yes you will experience some uncomfortable moments but as we say time and patience you will get through this. I'm worried about not being able to work again, I lost an amazing dream job because of this whole situation and am hoping to get another one when I am recovered. My brain feels like mush everyday and working in development that's not something you can afford. I'm used to my sharp, critical thinking, complex problem solving brain and since this ordeal began I feel like that's gone now 😔 does the cognitive sharpness return?

• Early 2026: Stopped the Prozac trial, followed 20 days later by stopping the Ativan.

• Spring 2026: Enjoyed a 6-week break (while clearing lingering Prozac markers).

• Late Spring 2026: Took Buspirone for 1 month, stopped due to chest pain side effects (triggering the original dizziness when stopped).

• May–July 2026: 9-week run of Lexapro stopped due to adverse reaction and currently in WD

@Bernadette is right, @overthepill . Right now, your cognitive skills are muffled by anxiety. Once you manage your anxious thinking, you’ll find your critical thinking skills will return more quickly than you think.

It's so weird though because this doesn't feel like my normal anxiety that I have always dealt with my whole life, this feels like a dread that consumes all of my mental bandwidth and doesn't let me think about or do anything else. If I try to do anything it's like I'm constantly in a state of unease until I stop doing it and go back to thinking about and ruminating on how I feel. It's so hard to explain and even harder to endure. 😔

That is reassuring, I had a moment the other day that scared the living crap out of me where I added two numbers in my head incorrectly and freaked out thinking my brain was shutting down on me. 😔

This is pretty common as well. The anxious mind needs control to maintain its power. So it attacks anything that may take attention away from it. So, when you try to shift your focus to work or anything else, it’ll do its best to drag you back to ruminations. Don’t fight the dark thoughts because that gives them power. Let them come, but you don’t have to respond to them. Focus on what’s in front of you for just a few minutes, and you’ll start seeing improvement.

Any tips on what can alleviate this intense muscle tension in my upper back shoulders neck and chest, I feel like I'm being crushed. 😔

Try some simple tai chi exercises. They’re easy on the joints and muscles and following them will help focus your thoughts. There are some good short videos for beginners on YouTube.

It is very early days @overthepill the journey is often up and down, this is very normal.

Your symptoms are very common in WD.

Please try not to give Aka too much power over you. I know there is alot of fear over it. For me it is a horrible symptom and I understand that, however it is just that another symptom that will pass with all the others. If you are not suffering from it, this is good. Don't fear what has not happened yet. One day at a time. The past and the future does not matter just today mate.

You are not alone, and many have walked this path before you and come out the otherside. You will too.

@overthepill my dear friend just on break at work, and see your having intense muscle tightness, @mstimc60 has good idea about tai chi, definitely something to look into, if you can tolerate a hot water Epsom salt bath that might give you some relief. I'm so sorry this is getting uncomfortable for you, it just pains me to her you go through this, but it does get better over time. I myself was right were your at struggle to get through the WD, you are so strong and your body is doing what it needs to ,to repair itself. Yes this is a cruel thing these meds have done to us, but just keep the faith Overthepill, when your weak God is giving you strength to push through, he carries us at our weakest, he guides us when we feel lost and I have full faith he will heal all of us at just the right time, just the right moment and not a second sooner. For he is building us stronger and more resilient so nothing like this can ever break us again. Hugs for now xxxx Bernadette

Good afternoon Bernadette, thank you for the suggestions and kind words. Today is better from a muscle tension point of view but my head symptoms have really been strong today and the nausea has made it difficult to eat but I do it anyways. Temperature is off today and having chills. Another lovely day in paradise 🤣

@overthepill glad the muscle tension has eased up, as far as the head issues they can get intense but they will lighten up, just need to let it pass. I to myself had a lot of head pressure as if my brain was expanding and my scull was restricting it, but like everything else it did lighten up. Right now I'm at our camp site sitting in front of the fire, just nature and me, and walking a lot bare foot, good grounding technique. Just a little quivers in the tummy but having a good time with my husband for our Anniversary. Going to Pioneer Days and a flee market. Hopefully the temperature stays decent and not to hot. Hope you have a restful night, and praying for a window of relief for you.

I miss cooking, gardening, working on my computer, playing video games, reading books, practicing calligraphy, drawing, and all my other hobbies, I can't do anything at the moment, I hope this part passes soon and I am able to at least do some things because just laying here in misery like this is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Hey @overthepill I’m sorry things are really hard at the moment. I know a lot of us in the worst of this just feel like we’re surviving one moment to the next instead of really living. One thing I’ve tried to do is to reframe how I think about the things I can’t do right now — so instead of thinking about how I’m missing out on those things or how much I’ve lost, I think about the things I’m looking forward to doing when I’m feeling better. It’s not perfect, and my brain definitely gets pretty negative despite my best efforts, but just thought I’d share in case it’s even a little bit helpful 💜

I’m not a medical professional and cannot offer medical advice. I am new to this journey and my thoughts are based only on my personal experience with psychiatric drugs. This is a peer site where we support each other on our taper/recovery journeys.

Cymbalta - 90 mg/day

Seroquel - 12.5 mg/day

Cymbalta - 60 mg/day, periodically down to 30 mg/day - May 2014 to May 2025

Clonazepam - up to 1 mg/day as needed - March to May 2025, quick taper off

Yea I've been doing that with my wife and daughter, I've been making a list of restaurants I want to go to with my wife when I'm well enough to do so (We love going out to eat), and I've been making a list of things to do and places to go to with my daughter when I'm well enough. It's just frustrating and depressing not knowing when that will be. One hopes to heal quickly and get on with their life but then the fear that this could be a long drawn out process looms over your head and you worry about losing time with your child and not being present for the important moments of their childhood. 😞

Afternoon @overthepill , how are you doing? It's been decent here with the heat as long as I have shade and a slight breeze. This year I've been having issues with heat but just another one of those WD symptoms cause last year it didn't bother me. I guess I'm just stubborn and push through it, I refuse to let this beat me. Am I where I wanna be at this time, no, but time is my friend and patience is a virtue so in the meantime I just let things be and not fight it. I am optimistic and just keep the faith that the Lord my God will heal me fully. Stay strong my friend.

Glad to hear you're having an enjoyable time, your positive outlook on things is inspiring. It's been a mixed bag on my end, my symptoms are relentless but somehow I'm getting some of the best sleep I've gotten in years so go figure lol I'm averaging 8 to 10 hours a night. My muscle tension is a little better than the other day now if my head symptoms could give me a little window of relief id be in business. I'm having this weird anxiety that has been nagging at me today but I've kinda just been pushing it to the side and letting the day pass. Hoping for a better tomorrow. May you continue to enjoy your trip!

@overthepill , this is wonderful to here you are getting 8 to 10hours of sleep, your body needs it and is an excellent sign things are improving. Nice to know the muscle tension has lightened up to give you some relief. Your doing a great job my friend letting symptoms come and go an don't over analyze. Sending prayers and thoughts to a window. How is the weather by you, good I hope. Hugs for now xxxx Bernadette
