Sonia2: Protracted withdrawal citalopram since 11 months off

Featured Replies

Hi, Thank you Luke for creating this site in such a short space of time, it's nothing short of genius.

I was on the Surviving Antidepressant website for over five years. I came off citalopram at 0.3 mg eleven months ago and am still getting symptoms, some old ones recurring and some new ones. When I figure out how to link my signature from the SA website I will do so. I had lots of help on that site from moderators, mentors and administrators over the years and I would love to keep in touch with people who often responded to me so I hope they join up too so we can log our progress together. Thanks for having me.

This is my recovery thread on SA https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/forums/topic/30488-sonia009-citalopram-discontinuationreinstatement/

2008, 10 mg citalopram, 2.5 mg bendroflumethiazide.

2021 reduced citalopram over 3 years and stayed on 5.2 mg citalopram for approx. 1 year.

Sept 2023 taken off all meds and put on amitriptyline 10 mg and Ramipril 2.5 mg.

October 2023 taken off amitriptyline and ramipril and put on propranolol 10 mg and Losartan 25 mg.

November 2023 taken off propranolol and losartan.

December 2023 back on citalopram 0.5 mg and bendroflumethiazide 2.5 mg.

February 2024 taken off bendroflumethiaide put on bisoprolol 1.25 mg but came off it same month. Put on ramipril 1.25 mg, still on citalopram 0.5 mg. Stopped ramipril same month. Decided to quit all meds.

June 2024 0.45 mg citalopram

July 2024 0.4 mg citalopram

October 2024 0.2 mg citalopram but had to increase to 0.3 mg same month

January 2025 quit citalopram at 0.3 mg CT.

Not taking any prescription meds currently, health checks have been good results to date.

I’m sorry you’ve seen some setbacks @Sonia2, piling normal life stuff on top of WD can be so hard. The heat out there sounds absolutely brutal. I hope this wave passes for you soon 💜

Hi, I came across a UK website for withdrawal coaching after reading my message from @Chippy , thank you, regarding trying a withdrawal coach. It's Barbara Bell Coaching, maybe someone here has tried

Hi Sonia2, I am now at 0,32 of Mirtazapine. I have taken it for 4 days (before was at 0,34). As per your experience, do you think that I can quit it after 14 days in 0,3mg? My symptoms are insomnia, body pain, cortisol spikes, adrenaline rushes, awful anhedonia... But these symptoms have been there and with the same intensity since 10 months...

Svetla

2011-2023 Paxil

2023-2024 Effexor

Since February 2024 in anhedonia caused by the long use of AD

February 2024-March 2025 drug after drug after drug... 70 rTMS sessions, 8 ketamin infusions-nothing worked

March 2025 CT upon doctor "advice" from Desipramine, Viibryd, Lithium at high doses all together in 6 days

Since then awful withdrawal: unbearable anxiety, panic attacks, adrenaline rushes, hot flashes, muscle pain over all the body, insomnia, depression, intrusive thoughts, brain fog

Current tapering Mirtazapine : December 29,2025-3 mg, February,15, 2025-2,7 mg, February,28-2,5 mg, March,8-2 mg, March,14-1,5 mg, March,20-0 mg

I think you should taper futher, 0.3mg is way too high, you should go at least for 0.1mg and you could argue you should go for lower, especially with you not being okay.

if you handle cuts without issues and you don't get worse from the cuts at all then maybe 0.1mg is okay but im not sure as I'm not the best person for advice,  I don't have experience coaching people really.

Feel free to mention me whenever help is needed.

Current Supplements: Morning: Aloe Vera Gels. Night: 6mg melatonin and 133mg magnesium glycinate. Taking Omega 3 as needed to calm dyskinesia or over stimulation..

Current Medications: Mirtazapine, Lasea (lavender oil) before bed.

------------------------------------------

Tapering: Mirtazapine 15mg, (went compounded) 13.5mg 08/May/2025, 12.1mg 10/July/2025, 15/July/2025 15mg (half tablet), 26/July/2025 14.35mg (moved to dry cutting method) ), 03/Aug/2025 14.6mg, 24/Nov/2025 14.47mg, 29/Jan/2026 14.35mg

Note: Had a lot of issue with degradation with different cutting times and compounded pharmacy which caused withdrawals and a more sensitive nervous system.

Hi , honestly if I had to do it a gain I would continue to reduce slowly. I tried to speed things up mainly because my husband was ill and I was hoping I would feel better off the drug but it didn't work out. I never did stabilise on the lower doses and I'm in protracted withdrawal now and still getting horrible symptoms and unable to drive my car. You don't appear to have stabilised either reading your symptoms just be careful you don't make the same mistake as me. Take care x

I’d be careful cutting if your symptoms are severe. You need to be stable really for your system to handle further changes. It’s not uncommon to have to hold for a long time.

Take your time coming down in small small steps. Protracted withdrawal is no joke there’s no rush.

Hi Sonia2,

You look familiar from SA but I don't think we interacted much. I hope that your symptoms get better from the CT.  There is healing time that will occur and hopefully whatever symptoms you are having, you also have some positive experiences to note too. We don't know how long the pendulation of waves and windows will last, some say 1-2 years. Let me know if you have questions about polyvagal exercises to build up our nervous system regulation. I hope to have it posted at some point on this site. You can find back at SA for now under Symptoms and Self-Care https://www.survivingantidepressants.org/forums/topic/32761-polyvagalnervous-system-regulation-exercises/

Thank you, no I don't think we did connect on SA but I appreciate your interest. I have downloaded the link you sent on the exercises I can do myself, thank you, I will certainly try these. My symptoms have increased for about two months now, headaches, neck ache, dizziness, balance, anxiety, weird aches and pains coming and going. I think maybe it's stress related with my husband being ill and the stress and expectations of Christmas. I still manage to walk my dog so I'm not back where I used to be but I want and need to do so much more. Thank you again, it's good to be here.

I’m glad! I hope the exercises help. There’s so much we can learn and try and see what sticks! It all takes practice and time to experience effects and, as we know, heal.

Happy New Year!

Hi, I've had a rough couple of days, dizziness peaking again, weird head sensations, weird dreams, upset tummy, headaches, stiff neck. I know Christmas is stressful but I've been racking my brains, what's left, to think what I've done differently. I have been eating honey on toast a lot recently but surely it's not that. I did have a slice of Christmas cake too. Hopefully it will pass soon enough but it is worrisome nevertheless. Hope everyone has a happier new year.

Hey Sorry you're having a bad couple of days. There are a few of us like this atm. Me included. Its totally normal go though periods of feeling worse after feeling better. This will pass. Be kind to yourself, accept it and distract yourself with things you love to do to keep your mind off your symptoms.

Im sure the cake was fine but I avoid due to the possibility of alcohol in it, probably all burned off but I don't risk it. Sugary things aren't the best for our CNSs but I did slip up a couple of times and have a chocolate myself over Christmas. Plus my lad and I made a choc log and it would be rude not to eat it. I generally avoid. Wouldn't worry about it though you'll be fine! :)

Thanks for cheering me up Chippy. Making a chocolate log with your son sounds like fun.  I'm not used to eating many sweet things myself so I probably overdid things, come to think of it I had chocolate gateau as well. I hope you feel better soon. Best wishes for the new year.

Hi guys, what a horrible few days I'm having,  sore throat, relentless migraine type headache, awake all night last night, absolutely no appetite, feeling weak and completely out of it. I must have got a virus but temperature is normal. It couldn't be withdrawal could it? Another day like this and it will drive me up the wall. Hope everyone is keeping up their strength and perseverance Best wishes for better dsys.

Hi Sonia, I sometimes feel as though I'm fighting a virus but am pretty sure it's withdrawal.  Like you, I don't have the temperature yet I can have shivers and that aching innards and joints feeling.  So not quite the same as you but I certainly put my episodes down to withdrawal.

If you've lost your appetite are you struggling to get fluids and nutritious food down you?  If you're unable to eat that might explain the weakness and headaches.

It's difficult to distinguish between withdrawal and 'normal illness' sometimes, hope you're getting enough rest and that you recover soon.

Hi Mamgu, thanks for replying. Yes I get the aches, changes in body temperature too, like flu symptoms, they come and go. This time it started with what seemed to be a head cold but the sneezes and feeling cold went after two days. I've also been getting upset stomach so it could be stress causing acid reflux which could explain my throat. I suppose anything can have an affect on my already sensitized cns. Hopefully it will disappear soon but it doesn't stop me from worrying. I'm drinking water and trying to eat small amounts of food. It's just been a couple of chicken sandwiches today, toast, a crumpet and a couple of ginger biscuits and you're right, food does help relieve the headache. It's not too bad at the moment, I just need a good night's undisturbed sleep. I've been awake since midnight so I've been zombie like today. Hope you are doing ok, and your dog. x

I totally understand the worrying, I've developed health anxiety since tapering Citalopram.  In itself it's exhausting without all the physical symptoms.  We can't win can we!

If your symptoms are withdrawal or not, they will go.  Easier said than done but when I go into health anxiety spirals I remind myself it'll get better and if I tell myself often enough, the message gets through.

Hope you had a good night's sleep - once you have that everything else will fall into place!

My dog and I are OK thanks, both calmed down a little since the drama last week at the vets!
