Healing_s: Is this the process?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!!

Almost two months have passed since I been out meds. What a scary process this is, no one warned me about what was coming… but let’s start from the beginning.

2019 was a very difficult year when it comes to work. Like an addicted I couldn’t do nothing but work, even a sunny Sunday was a day that I had to do some work at home. And even if I didn’t had any work I would invent some to do. I think most of things were fine, but then I started to feel overwhelmed with it. I felt like if my life was going but I couldn’t actually live it. My work environment wasn’t also perfect, there was like a feeling in the air that we had always to be on top, we couldn’t feel exhausted, we always had to delivered more and more. And then I started to feel unmotivated, I was not happy to go to work. Work something I love to do was suddenly something I was obligated to fulfill. I was always such a passionate Person and I lost the glow. I started to feel anxious, nervous, sad, stuck, and i didn’t enjoy anything. That was also when I began to think about quitting my job. Then I started to stress about it and that was when I started to be afraid of go to sleep, thinking I would not wake up on the next day but also with the feeling that sleeping was loosing time and I still had a lot to do and live. That was the breaking point of the medication, prescribed by my family doctor. I started the road of venlafaxine and sedoxil.

Seven years after, I decided it was time to stop this, I felt good in my life, with some stability and mentally stable to go through this.

I thought it was going to be difficult for some time, but never imagined what was to come. First two days of meds was just fine, not a lot of symptoms. But then the world got darker and darker. So I was a little dizzy, didn’t quite felt the floor beneath my feet, wasn’t really hungry, didn’t manage to drive ‘cause I couldn’t focus. But I thought, I think I can manage it, if these are the symptoms then I will make it easily !!!

The symptoms

As you may know by now that was the easy part…. That’s true. Then one Saturday evening, not even a week after, a darker thought just cross my mind, an emptiness just grabbed my mind and heart and I fel in a dark hole. Start to question every little thing, even if the earth is really round, why where cars driving, felt totally as an alien that just came to this planet and were learning about humans living their life.

Felt so scared, and so panic, and so lonely in the world. I didn’t understand what was happening, how did I stopped understanding the world, my life?! I started to feel afraid of going to sleep again, thinking I was going to die at any second.

I tried to explain this feeling to my family, friends and psychologist, but no one seemed to understand exactly what was I talking about. It’s always something “on our heads”!

I went to see my family doctor and when I said that, she made a weird face, like “this is going to be difficult than it was supposed” and booked an appointment with another psychologist. This new psychologist was just… I don’t even know what to call it… after speaking to her about the symptoms she just told me: so if people have a disease… people just take a medicine, if YOU decided to STOP, then you just to deal with consequences! I was dying after this, so I am making all this effort, being brave enough to tell my body this is a fresh start and 5 seconds with this lady and she just throw me to the floor, like if I made it wrong !!! Ridiculous.

So on my way home that was when I found a natural products store. After I told the girl that I just did my tapper, the first thing she told me was: congratulations that’s a huge step, you are being very brave! So that was when I found the supplements I’m taking know, tryptophan. This came to help me with physical symptoms, it’s been a progress, and a good one.

I desperately been looking to find some literature about this, and actually found 1 book, that made me find this community!! And I understand that abstinence is actually a thing, and that it is what I am going through. Another tool I found useful was indeed, AI - Gemini. And believe when I tell you I hated I use AI, but my despair was huge. It has been acting as a support during this process, it explains scientifically all symptoms and gives me some suggestions of practical actions that I can use when I am dealing with my anxiety.

Two months after the tapper, I still don’t feel connected to the world, I cannot deal with political systems, watch the news, have a discussion about something, understand the real purpose of life or of my work, I’m stuck on this loop of philosophical questions about life, because I cannot feel! I don’t get satisfaction, or simply joy for life. Everything is a red flag, or makes my brain understand danger. I felt one time, for a brief moment some mental clarity, like satisfaction and mental peace, almost like happiness for just being present in the world at that moment, but next morning it was not there anymore.

I think this just happend to let me know I’m alive here somewhere, and that when all systems are recovered I will be able to feel that way again. I really hope so.

Even though I know it’s lonely, empty, scary, panic, somewhere down there there is a little hope that this will pass. So hold on to that!! I will try that too.

2019 - 2026 - velafaxine 75mg + sedoxil 1mg

14/03/2026 - withdrawal - sedoxil 1 pill each two days until total stop for about two weeks.

Velafaxine - 37,5 mg for 1 month until total stop.

14/04/2026 - final taper day.

tryptophan supplement - 2 months and half. Stopped on July 18th as I was not feeling well.

I'm so sorry to read about the tough time you've had recently you will find plenty of support here for sure.

In the mean time this is what I would do if I were you:

-Stay Hydrated

-Eat a good clean whole food diet, avoiding processed foods and sugars.

-Stay away from caffeine, alcohol and antihistamines and any other psychoactive substances.

Supplements are to be avoided initially, as they often irritate our nervous systems. Try to get your nutrition through food.

Down the line, you may wish to introduce Fish Oil and Magnesium. Those who can tolerate them have found them calming to the nervous system. Be careful try one at a time and start low and see how you get on should you choose to try them.

Especially with trytophan supplements, it's worth being cautious. I'm not saying don't take them, but do keep monitoring to see if you think they might be worsening you.

A daily walk is very important as much as you can manage, if you can manage it. Gets you your fresh air and Vitamin D does wonders for your mind!

How are you coping with your symptoms in general? Are you able to function somewhat normally in life? Keep up with work, or other commitments? Look after yourself?

You've mentioned feeling disconnected from it all, but in practical terms, are you able to function?

Finally, to validate what you said about being brushed off, told it's all in your head and so on:

What you are going through, many in this community are also going through or have gone through.

It's not in your head, it's not your "original disease" which is the usual nonsense people are fed. You know deep down that these drugs did something to you.

Most people can and do recover in time, but it can be a considerable amount of it.

You are very welcome here and I hope you find the site supportive.

Luke,

Thank you for your words! It’s really helpful to know that we are not, indeed, alone.

Even though physical ones are easier to manage, and to accept they do happen, most of the times they affect my ability to work, but I keep going, sometimes with some struggle. But never giving up.

4 hours ago, Luke said:

I try to focus on the task itself. And just let the thought go through my mind. Sometimes I just stare at something for a few minutes or just go outside for 5 minutes to focus on something else.

Most of the times I’m just no able to understand if this weird thoughts are because of withdrawal or actually are already in my mind.

Now I don’t feel the extreme panic I felt before, that would paralise me, and I would prefer to do no task at all and just stay whithout moving in my couch.

2019 - 2026 - velafaxine 75mg + sedoxil 1mg

tryptophan supplement - 2 months and half. Stopped on July 18th as I was not feeling well.

The reason I'm asking you these questions, is that I'm trying to establish whether your symptoms are utterly intolerable, which would make it worth considering reinstating venlafaxine at a very low dose (far lower than you'd think):

However, it sounds like you're fairly functional despite it being challenging, and I'd suggest it would likely be better to push through and give it time and hope to improve.

Hey @Healing_s

Welcome to the forum!

It is great that you found us.

I think many here can relate with the performance/work overwhelm of the modern world. I certainly fell into that camp, and that is the route cause of all my previous anxiety. So common for sleep to be effected as well.

You were on your drugs quite some time and although you say you tapered them, it appears you did every other day dosing for the Benzo and just cut Venlafaxine in half for a while and then stopped? This is very fast indeed and not really tapering. Tapering Information

Just to chime in with Luke, we are wanting to understand how bad your symptoms are at the moment? Could you rate them out of 10? 10 being the worse you can imagine and 1 being mild? Be good for us to get a grasp on how difficult things are for currently.

Hi @Chippy

Indeed…from what I’ve been reading it looks like it was a very fast stop of benzo and venlafanixe, but that was exactly how my family doctor told me to do. As I didn’t know better… I follow the instructions. So sedoxil was the first to come off, while still on velafaxine 75 mg. 2 weeks with one pill of 1 mg, every other day. Then total stop and continuing with venlafaxine. After these two weeks, I began the lowest dose (that you can buy in pharmacies) for a total month and then stop.

2 months completed today without meds. And a month completed with the tryptophan Supplement. Last two weeks, 10 derealization, 10 no satisfaction/no feelings, 5 brain zaps, 6 no appetite, 2 dizziness.

Last two days I think I got a window, I feel some mental clarity, I can laugh, no brain zaps, 8h30 sleep, last night I got almost 3h or REM. I can plan stuff to do and I felt the will to do things… so for me that’s a huge victory. Still very difficult (6) to deal with thinking about the purpose of things, with crazy things like “why do we talk about innovation? Or study things to exhaustion and always bring new theories about what we do if we are just spending and entertaining our time on earth?”

I’m really trying not to focus on this, doing practical tasks and getting tired doing this things so my mind doesn’t go that way.

Thank you both! @Chippy and @Luke for your support, it’s really important to know there are people who want to simply know how we are doing.

Hi @Healing_s . You are in good hands with @Chippy and @Luke . Its great you're getting windows--those tell you that you're healing. Distraction and staying busy is good therapy--it focuses your mind on something besides your dark thoughts. Just remember the dark thoughts are just that--thoughts. They only have the power you give them. They may try to tell you can't do something, but that's the only way they can keep their power. If you can accept that the thoughts may come, but you don't have to give them room in your mind, they'll lose their power.

BTW, my wife and I lived in Portugal for two years 2019-2021; one year in Porto and one in Lagos. Its a beautiful country and the people are very gracious.

Sounds like things are quite hard for you, altough you are functioning and having some windows. On this basis you may wish to stay off the drugs and just recover. You rate the symptoms high enough to justify trying a small RI imo, but if you are functioning and coping it's equally sensible to stay where you are. Always your choice and we are here for you what ever you do.

I’m quite stubborn, so after this experience, I don’t consider any medication even in a small dose. I know, deep down, my brain will recover and will be able to function, even if in distant future… even if I do have to go this negative process.

But I do have a question @Chippy these thoughts, and profound questions and disconnection with my purpose and life purpose are deep related to WD? Because I had never question these things before in this deep way. I did question the purpose of my work, but never in a way that I would question the whole system.

Last night I had a really bad night. I couldn’t fall asleep, and when I did I got this vivid nightmare that woke me up and got me in huge state of anxiety that I thought something was going to happen to me. Sometimes I do get this thought that I’m not gonna wake up on the next day, and this keeps me from falling asleep.

@mstimc60 i really try not to give them power, but sometimes it’s kind of not in my power, it just get stuck in my mind. I try to focus on the lowest level, and focus on performing a task. But still those are very scaring thoughts… it’s like a level of emptiness and miscomprehension of the world that I never felt before. Specially because my work it’s related to traveling through Europe and this creates a sensation that the world is a very small place, that everywhere looks the same, that there is nothing different, so we do work and try to make a difference for nothing.

P.s: even thou I feel this way, Portugal is my country, and the place I call home so it’s very good that you felt welcome here!

These drugs really mess with our sleep architecture, struggling to fall asleep, being jerked awake, running hot at night, waking frequently, waking early, needing the bathroom a lot, vivid dreams, all part of WD syndrome. Main thing is to accept this fact and don't add to it with any second fear response. Accept your body knows what it is doing, radically accept what is happening to you and you will sleep as much as you need. I know it sounds mad, but you need to accept that you have no control of if you wake up or not! Wild I know! But if you can do that you will detatch yourself from that fear response and it will help you no end I think.

Hey guys!

So today I got a new psychiatry appointment, and got some new data to understand. So even though I showed some new and good improvements, doctor says that this couldn’t be called as WD syndrome. 2 months is not on the list within WD. So even if I’m still struggle with falling asleep, focus on the computer, not really find the purpose of my life, light sensibility, it’s not considered WD anymore. Still the doctor might agree that this could be a transition process, and we agreed that we will see the state of play in October, and consider the reinstatement of a new med.

With this new information, I felt really sad because of disbelief on WD syndrome, but also with myself for not being able to prove that my brain can actually function. Very sad for feeling that there might be the possibility of reinstate of medication.

Even though no one’s a doctor here, just would like to know your opinions on this matter. I do believe that after almost 7 years of medication it’s not gonna be in two months that I will be totally back but what if I’m really messed up and actually need it?

Just don’t know what to think…

Hey @Healing_s Thanks for the latest update, I've move it back here to your into thread. Please keep all these updates in one place :)

It is common for doctors to not recogise WD. I would strongly suggest you don't start any more drugs. They will make all this worse, the doctors will just blame you and tell you to try another. The only thing you should do if you want to of course is RI a small dose of Venlafaxine, this may cushion WD for you. We can help with the dose suggestion, by small we mean under 1mg.

@Healing_s almost everyone on this forum, and in every other support group I've been in, has experienced this. Guidelines in various western countries recognise withdrawal syndrome lasting years, doctors just still say no.

I also would not recommend introducing new drugs. We've seen it happen time and time again and it rarely goes well.

IF you take anything else, it would be a very low dose reinstating your previous drug, however at 2 months off and having windows/better periods I really wouldn't if I were you. You'll likely improve in more time.

Well guys, this has been a very difficult day. Last three nights the sleeping was not good, just manage to sleep 3/4hours, today just had a stressful time and everything when down like crazy, just because I needed to be somewhere on time, i didn’t finish a task I was supposed and I just in spiral loop! I don’t know if this will ever pass, if I will be able to be an enthusiastic person again or just live the moment again and everything looks dark and with no hope 😔

I know some improvements happend but I still feel like I’m not myself, I can take away the crazy thoughts of don’t connect with reality!

I feel very lost and exhausted of this process.

Im very sorry to hear, this process can be like this, but your body is working hard for you to put things right. Try to reduce your expectations of yourself during this time. We can't be expected to perform as we would previously have like to, priortise low stress and healthy living. Nothing matters right now but your recovery.

Hi everyone!

Thank you @Chippy and @Sminismoni for your words and feedback!

I know two months it’s not even close to the time things were supposed to improve still I can see some improvements in this process. So what I am dealing with right now is:

Physical symptoms:

  • Generalized vibration

  • Dizziness (not always. Specially in the days with minor sleep)

  • Hunger is a trigger for the body to start going desperate.

  • Eating very small quantities, and most of things give me nausea

Psychological symptoms:

  • Anxiety - huge anxiety feelings, that goes until panic is all over the place.

  • Feeling like the way people live is an illusion. And so the time we spent here doing the things we do is just to spend time on earth. Does anyone feels this?! Because this is a very scary and lonely feeling.

  • Not be able to talk about future, or seeing my future life.

  • Thinking I will be like this forever, that I’m really ill so it’s better to take something, specially when I’m under anxiety.

So this is what happens when the loop starts.

I went travelling this weekend, and I had a huge episode of anxiety that began inside the airplane until the afternoon. Still I didn’t stop doing my activities, like walking, visiting museums, but I was on the limit. Vibrating all the time, feeling my heart was going to jump off, thinking I was in distress and that I should be just focusing on the moment and couldn’t enjoy, when all I want to do is live my life and enjoy being alive!

At the end of the afternoon I just took a risk activity and all my adrenaline was washed away… and finally I had a huge moment of embracing life and just felt the moment, and enjoyed being alive and the world was a safe space again.

And I just want that life again. So I hope that means that this is just WD, and this is really my brain trying to fix its connections and creating a stable connection.

Because it feels like every time the bad feelings come it’s even difficult than the previous one, and even thou I try to cope and try to make a mental mechanism to be calm, this hit me hard.

It’s not really fair that we just cannot understand what’s going on with us.

Yes, it really sounds like it all WD because you have moments of clarity, calm, and enjoyment. For being just two months off, you're really doing well. You want to find that balance--testing boundaries a little but not to the point you're being triggered. You don't want the anxious thought loop to control what you do or how you live your life, but there will be times you feel overwhelmed. When that happens, don't judge yourself too harshly or think you're slipping backwards. We all have good and bad days, but the bad ones don't mean the next one will be bad, too.

This all sounds like typical WD to me. Try to think about keeping your nervous system calm. Consider if travelling atm is a bit overwhelming for you, if you can manage it great, but if it's too activating for you it may be best to reduce this to aid healing.

Try to rationally consider that having already begun to improve, way before most people do, when most people go on to recover, is totally at odds with the withdrawal-driven catastrophising that you're finding difficult.

Nothing I say is medical advice, it is simply my opinion. I am an anonymous person on an internet forum with no relevant qualifications other than being badly harmed by a drug. For all you know, I could be an idiot. You are making your own decisions and part of that is deciding how much to listen to my opinion, if at all.

hi everyone!

Almost three months have gone by after stoping meds. Some improvements are starting to take place, finally.

So far no more brain zaps, or dizziness, no more noise while the systems are updating.

Psychological symptoms are the most difficult ones, but I think DR is finally starting to give me a break. I still find it difficult when thinking about things like the world is a bigger place, or that the systems do controle our lives, that being in my country or flying to another seems like the same thing, so distance feels small, and doesn’t have the magnitude that it used to have. Philosophic questions are most of the day in my head… question why everything is or happens.

Sleeping is one of the things that is still not good. It’s difficult to fall asleep and it’s difficult to keep sleeping all night. Every transition is very light so if do wake up, I get an anxiety spike, so makes it harder to go back to sleep. And even though I tell my brain is time to sleep and that we are in a safe place he doesn’t seem to care… so keeps me in alert state.

I as able to go back dancing, even if it’s at the end of the day, so keeps me quite excited by the time I need to go to sleep.

What I’ve learned so far:

I’ve learned to create some mechanisms to everytime DR comes up, I just mentally say “start resting protocol”. Like giving my brain the idea that this thought is only because of my tiredness. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Breathing exercises don’t really work for me.

Every morning when I get up (whenever I manage sleeping) I take a few seconds/minutes to establish my intentions for the day. Like feeling secure, feeling present, or just trying to enjoy.

As time goes by in this process the more I come to learn that this is like going back to being kids again. It looks like every time our brain faces a new situation, a challenge, taking a risk, laughing at a joke, practicing exercise, cooking, a decision it’s like if it was the first time and he learns how to manage it and the way it should feel about it. So for this matter whenever there’s a good reaction I try to say it to myself like “that’s the state, record it”.

I still don’t know if these are truly withdrawal symptoms, still I do know most of things that happen to me were either the first time I’ve ever felt them (like DR) or they were completely, logically, out of my control.

Deep down during this process there is something that is quite glued to us, hope. Even when things look truly dark and hopeless, there is an instinct to survive to it and improve.

This is an excellent strategy @Healing_s . The mornings set the tone for the rest of our day, and creating an intention to start them positively gives you a great foundation for the rest of the day.

Yes! WD and recovery may seem endless, but they're not. By practicing your coping skills, you are helping yourself to heal. You're doing great!

This is very good news! Seeing so much improvement in such a short space of time is very positive indeed!

Unfortunately sleep is one of the last symptoms to resolve. Slowly it will come back for you, but try not to worry about, you want to avoid adding second fear into the mix, radically accept the sleep you get. Just trust your body to get the sleep you need, it might not feel nice sometimes but it will be enough. I relate with what you have said and this is WD/injury causing this. Sleep in WD

Hi!!

Another question that I cannot find an answer to it. I feel that most symptoms are trying to settle. Still even if my mind is relaxed I feel anxious, so physically I feel my heart beat and some general vibration on my body. Even if I’m not having and thought loop. I’ve experienced high anxiety already during this process but right now if I’m a little nervous about something, minor nervous feeling, it feels like even if my mind is comfortable, or relaxed, my body is experiencing anxiety. Like if there’s a disconnection between mind and body. Is this normal?
