Some0n3: Tapering off escitalopram after suffering from withdrawal symptoms for over a year even after reinstating

making a quick little post here as ive been taking melatonin now for a while and it helps me sleep but today i found a melatonin that also contains l-theanine and magnesium along with B vitamin. i think it was B6? anyways im wondering if it would be safe to try something like this or not and also wondering if l-theanine or magnesium has any withdrawal effect potential if stopped abruptly? i find myself really drowsy in the mornings and that can last for quite a while so im wondering if this would make my sleep better possibly? im also aware that my drowsiness is probobaly caused by a combination of being in withdrawal, the ssri and overall stress. along with possibly the melatonin since the one i take is long lasting so i can be sure that its gonna affect for a long time.

In general, I would prefer to always have a supplement that is only one nutrient and not multiple of nutrients, cause then you don't know which one you reacted badly to, if you reacted badly to any of them.

You will have to try them each on their own to see if you react well or not.

There are people who react badly to vitamins like B6 and other B vitamins due to them being activating.

There are people who find magnesium helpful to calming down the nervous system.

Current Supplements: Morning: Aloe Vera Gels. Night: 6mg melatonin and 133mg magnesium glycinate. Taking Omega 3 as needed to calm dyskinesia or over stimulation..

Current Medications: Mirtazapine, Lasea (lavender oil) before bed.

------------------------------------------

Tapering: Mirtazapine 15mg, (went compounded) 13.5mg 08/May/2025, 12.1mg 10/July/2025, 15/July/2025 15mg (half tablet), 26/July/2025 14.35mg (moved to dry cutting method) ), 03/Aug/2025 14.6mg, 24/Nov/2025 14.47mg, 29/Jan/2026 14.35mg

Note: Had a lot of issue with degradation with different cutting times and compounded pharmacy which caused withdrawals and a more sensitive nervous system.

Sorry to hear that you're struggling with these symptoms @Some0n3. Personally I've always gotten headaches/migraines once in a while, but in withdrawal I get them much more often and they come and go

good call. maybe i should try them individually first. id assume that most only take magnesium glycinate and not the other variants?

It is a form that is highly absorbable, as well as considered best for relaxation and sleep, I seen it be the most recommended form in these forums, but there are some people who take different forms. Again you will have to see on yourself how it works out on you.

@Some0n3

If you want to try other supplements I’d suggest taking them as separate tablets so you try one at a time, at much lower doses than you get off the shelf, and increasing over time. Generally we recommend to get everything from food. Magnesium and fish oil is all we suggest on here, but low and slow and one at a time still.

Same with melatonin. What dose are you at the moment? It might be a tag high for you.

Ok. That might be a tad high. It’s best to start on a low dose and work up. Normally 0.25mg. Perhaps try to tweak it down a little and see if it helps. You want to taper it anyway when you decide to stop it.

yeah i could try to maybe split it in half. although i dont have a scale so i might not get an accurate measurment

Might be a bit too much in one drop IMO, Id grab some scales and then just remove 0.25mgai off and see if you notice if you are a bit better with the groggy feeling. Too much Melatonin can have some paradoxical effects and make people anxious, not sure if that is the case with you as you feel groggy, but I think it would be good to reduce it and see if you feel the benefit.

yeah that could be the way to go. might also be good practice before i start tapering the escitalopram in the future! ill look into scales when i get the money to be able to buy one. is there a reason that one needs to taper off melatonin? is it to prevent insomnia or something else?

The Gem-20 scales are pretty affordable and worth the money, there are better ones if you want to splash out.

Mainly rebound insomnia, but with all these things the nervous system doesn't like sudden shifts, so better to reduce more cautiously. Not like an AD, but just ease it down rather than jump the dose about. And ease it down to zero over a period of time when you come to stop.

alright thats totally fair! ive taken a look at the gem-20 in the past and it seems affordable atleast. can i do the whole AD taper with a gem 20 or does one need to buy a more expensive one as they get into lower doses?

You can do a lot of the taper on one. It gets to the point where cutting isn’t accurate enough. I’d buy the better scales because of reliability rather than the fact they go to 0.0000g. It’s hard to measure something to that level. I think liquid is the way to go at some point. The gem-20 does have reliability issues. I have a set and they are fine. So perhaps it’s hit and miss. I think for the money it’s worth getting a set. Perfect for cutting the Melatonin.

good to know. should i buy just one or multiple? especially for the gem-20 if it has reliability issues. and how much would a better scale cost approximately? i might invest in a gem at first and if i get issues with it, id be willing to fork some more on a better one as long as it isnt like super expensive.

good to know. should i buy just one or multiple? especially for the gem-20 if it has reliability issues. and how much would a better scale cost approximately? i might invest in a gem at first and if i get issues with it, id be willing to fork some more on a better one as long as it isnt like super expensive.

I’d just get one. If it seems ok run with it. If it isn’t right send it back.

It would be good for being economical when making a liquid too. You can weigh half a tablet or a set amount of powder and not waste a whole pill making a batch up. Or risk storing the liquid too long. Gives you options having a scale. Even if you go the liquid route for the whole taper.

Have a look in the diy liquids guide. There are suggest models of more expensive scales.

thank you for the wishes! about the same for me with the symptoms of the brain fog and feeling detached from everything but atleast the anxiety hasnt been bad so ill take the good with the bad. also havent had proper panic attacks in quite a while compared to the end of 2024 when i had them really frequently. most of my days seem to pretty much blend together and weeks feel so incredibly short as my mind aimlessly drifts through the days but ive managed to be outside of the house during certain days when going to the gym or just hanging out with friends for a bit which i find helps in dealing with all of this. although doing these things does exhaust me quite a bit energy wise but doing them is so worth it!

You’re doing great. I can hear the positive vibes in your post. Yes you’re having difficulty but you are able to still mobilise a great attitude, whilst using coping skills such as distraction to help get through the day. Great work! 👌👊

thank you! always love to see your support! i do have days where i seem to sink into a sad pit, wallowing in despair but i think that it is natural and i just let those moments happen because bottling them up only serves to hinder me further i feel like. its a bit funny to think about how all of these coping skills i have acquired now wouldve probobaly been enough to never start these medications in the first place but better late than never haha.

We all do. Acceptance is a continuous practice and not a destination, as are most coping skills tbh. It’s not about always doing everything correctly all of the time, it recognising that you’ve gone off course and correcting direction without guilt or shame.

I'm not sure, what I can say is that I've tried all of those things except melatonin and none of them did anything.

I would suggest, if you do want to introduce new things and try them, to add them individually rather than taking a combination of multiple substances all at once. This is what was recommended on SA.

Personally, I've found that supplements neither harm nor help me, but others seem to be quite sensitive.

Nothing I say is medical advice, it is simply my opinion. I am an anonymous person on an internet forum with no relevant qualifications other than being badly harmed by a drug. For all you know, I could be an idiot. You are making your own decisions and part of that is deciding how much to listen to my opinion, if at all.

Perhaps you should consider this post an artistic work of fiction written for entertainment purposes.
